Woodwork Classes

Joinery Techniques

Beginner to advanced

In each of these courses you will learn to make a series of joints commonly used in cabinetry and box making, each course building on the last.  All of the joints will be made entirely with hand tools.  You can choose to do one, two, or progress through all three of the courses.

  • Each course is 2 full days or 4 x 3 hours.

  • All tools and materials provided.

Joinery I

This course starts with a discussion about choosing and designing the most appropriate joint for the application, and the factors that effect that choice. The techniques covered include: halving, box mitre, frame mitre, pinned rebate, single dovetail, bridle and edge joints.  This course is suitable for beginners and students wishing to build on their existing knowledge.

Joinery II

This course builds on the fundamental skills learned in Joinery I. The techniques covered include: mitred bridle, mortise and tenon, twin mortise and tenon, common (through) dovetail, housing and sliding dovetail joints. This course is suitable for students who already have some experience working with wood.

Joinery III

This course is an extension of Joinery II with more advanced joints and an emphasis on complex dovetails including lapped (half blind), canted and double canted dove tails.

Suitable for more experienced students who already have some proficiency with the use of saws, chisels and marking out tools or those who have completed Joinery I and II
